²¹³ The phrase Eheyeh Asher Eheyeh is commonly translated in the present tense, I-AM-THAT-I-AM. Note, however, that the literal and simple trans- lation (peshuto) is future tense, as we translate it. Onkelos maintains the future tense, and Rashi’s translation is clearly future-oriented- “I will be with them during this travail, as I will be with them in future travails.” The main thrust of Nehama Leibowitz’s explanation (in Studies in Shemot, p. 60) is also future- oriented. She cites Psalms 9 1 :5, “I will be with them in trouble.”
